In Kerala the turmeric bowl arrives before the wedding does. It is passed between the women of both households, and what happens over it is closer to a conversation than a treatment.
The point was never a glow for the photographs — there were no photographs. It was a way of marking that something was about to change, performed by the people it was changing for.
The ceremony narrowed and the Sunday habit widened. By the time it reached most households it had stopped being an event and become the thing you did with whatever was in the kitchen: turmeric, curd, a little gram flour.
The root and the grinding. Everything else about how this is sold is new, and we would rather say so than pretend a jar is a lineage.

The same pack, mixed three ways. What your skin is asking for on the morning decides which one you make.
Ingredients
Sun-drying is faster, cheaper and takes the colour with it. Shade takes eleven days and keeps what the root was grown for.
From Reading To Ritual
Everything here is about one root and what it does. The jar is the same root, shade-dried and stone-ground.
